UIM (Underinsured) Motorist Insurance Coverage and UM (Uninsured) Motorist Insurance Coverage

No one wants to be in a car crash. When it happens, not only might you suffer from a headache caused by the physical impact, but also suffer with an insurance headache. Especially if you are the unfortunate victim of being injured by another driver who has no insurance, or minimal liability insurance limits.

Most drivers do not realize it, but UIM and UM insurance coverage on your vehicle insurance policy is as important as the liability coverage you choose. To that end, UIM (Underinsured) Motorist Insurance Coverage and UM (Uninsured) Motorist Insurance Coverage are mandatory insurance coverage requirements in New Jersey. Although liability coverage protects you and your assets if you are at fault for an accident, liability coverage does not protect you for your injuries if another driver is at fault for the accident.

This mandatory, important UIM / UM coverage protects you to make sure that there are funds available to you for YOUR bodily injuries and suffering if another driver is at fault for a car accident. Another way to view this is that your insurance company steps into the shoes of that at-fault driver if that driver is either uninsured (i.e. no liability insurance coverage) or if that at-fault driver has lower coverage than the limits you choose (i.e. if you choose $100,000 in UIM coverage, and the person who causes the accident only has $15,000 in coverage, you will have an additional $85,000 to go after, assuming that your injuries warrant that kind of recovery).

So, PROTECT YOURSELF! Don’t overlook the limits offered when choosing UIM and UM coverage on your automobile and motorcycle insurance policies. The amount you choose matters!
